Competitive niches, such as weight loss niche, are notoriously difficult to rank high on. With the big guys resides on the first page of search engines for main keywords, smaller sites are having a slim chance to rank high on such keywords – or is it?
Smaller sites are possible to compete with the big sites. But those smaller sites need to be smart in order to rake in organic traffics related to the top keywords – those sites need to target long-tail keywords.
Let’s take a health site for example – glycemic index site. It is doing what probably the rest of us need to be doing: Targeting a sub niche in a large niche, instead of focusing on micro niches – remember, the money is on the popular keywords and the long-tail keywords highly related to it.
So, GlycemicEdge.com is targeting sub niche, long-tail keywords, such as “glycemic index food list” and “south beach diet phase 1” – this way, they can still benefit from the main niche’s popularity, while having a chance to rank high on the sub-niches.
