Matt Cutts mentioned about Katamari Technique in his video, explaining some useful SEO concepts in how a white hat site can compete with black hat sites.
The “Katamari” term Matt mentioned is most probably referred from Katamari Damacy, a best-selling video game released by Namco back in 2004 that has a bizarre concept but highly addictive to play.
The idea of the game is this:
As a Prince of All Cosmos, you are given a katamari (“clump” in Japanese) and send to the earth to collect stuffs to create stars for All Cosmos – you start small and build up in size by rolling your katamari over the land and in the process, sticking anything you can find on earth – trees, even mountains.
A bizarre concept, indeed.
Now, similar to the Katamari Damacy game, Matt Cutts – most probably a fan of the game – explains that in order for a site using white hat techniques to overcome competition from the black hat sites, the site need to start small, focusing on a certain area or niche and start working on it. As your site assets (e.g. content,) reputation and authority get bigger and bigger, you will find your site to run over the black hat sites in the long run.
The idea is to roll your “katamari” in the niche adjacent to the main, highly competitive, niche. As your katamari is becoming bigger and bigger, you might want to either target your main niche or another niche adjacent to your already dominated niche.
