Forums link building and promoting your website or blog

Forums are a great but basic way of learning from other people while also being able to pass on your own knowledge at the same time while also gaining back links and traffic in one hit, quite a easy way of promotion is it not?

The most common way of getting traffic is by using the signature options that most forums offer this day and age, but are you using this function to your full potential?

I often see members on lots of forums who simply have a signature with text links like “Get free Money” or “Check my Site” but do you think that anyone really does click a link lame anchor text? OK you might get the odd person but would you really want just the odd visitor when you could have hundreds? Think about it, keep it interesting and make them wonder what your site is about!

Avatars are a great way of free self-promotion as the saying goes “A picture says a 1000 words! – I find the simpler the better, don’t give to much away and remember it’s a advert and not a award winning oil painting, the most important part of using a avatar is to put your domain onto the avatar, unless your Nike or Microsoft nobody is going to know what your logo is!

Now for you bloggers out there, you may have noticed that a lot of forums using the vBulletin software allow you to insert your blog feed so every time you post to your blog the feed will be placed by your username on the forum, its important once again make your post titles interesting so people will have the urge to click to visit your blog or website. I have found many fantastic blogs as I have noticed the rss feed and paid a visit and even bookmarked plenty so take advantage of that option if you have it.

Another method I don’t really like but its there for the taking is to use your location for putting a link into, I’m not sure how successful this is to be honest as its not a link just text.

Now you have set up your blog feed, your avatar looks fantastic and your signature and short but stabby and interesting for your potential client, all you simply have to do now is keep your posts interesting and always be correct in what you way. The best way for promotion in a forum is to simply start threads more than you reply so you get more coverage but keep your threads better than anyone elses as once you get respect you will notice your traffic starting to creep up day by day.

So time for you guys to give some input.

How did you find this blog? Have you had much success in forum promotion?

I enjoy your feedback and comments so please please please do comment :)

So you want backlinks and to be indexed in less than 24 hours

Some of you may remember my article regarding getting indexed within 24hours using a hand full of websites while getting a few back links at the same time. I still find what I wrote quite usefull but I have found something that completely blows my previous article out of the water.

I was checking out digitalpoint freebies section and came across a post boasting about a new SEO script that will get you indexed within 24hours while getting your new domain backlinks from websites with pagerank 6 and upwards. The post also claimed that it can get back links in the thousands all with good pagerank. I read the post a couple of times thinking it was a load of crap like most of the rubbish that gets placed on the freebie section of digital point, after all it was claiming something it could give you something for nothing…………. Indexed, backlinks that are from high pageranked websites which of course can improve your own page-rank when Google decides to update itself… Sounds to good to be true does it not?

I thought ill give this magic script ago by using a domin that I wasnt to bothered if it got dropped or not so why not?

I checked out the website and gave it a go, you simply type in your domain and make sure you have “new browser” selected and set how many pop up(new windows) you want to open at the same time. I had opted for 50 windows to open to see what it does, this gets annoying as you really do get 50 windows open up with all these websites that you have just pinged but never mind that was my choice and wont do that again. You can select less windows to open or do it manually by just clicking the links but that will take hours to do as you can get 100s of websites queing to ping your website and some of them leave a record on their website so you can get a backlink also while using the tool…………….. quite handy hey?

I must admit it took me a while to work out how the tool would force a website to make a backlink on the “pinged” website but it works the same as princiable of my last article so overall it gets a 8/10 from me. The main downside to this tool is that the websites it pings are mainly Chinese but they do have alot of websites with good pagerank and they are not adult websites or warez websites so you are pretty much safe from having bad links to your new website. The developer of the website has stated he wanted to clean up alot of the websites that the scripts uses for pinging and getting backlinks so hopefully there will be more English websites.

Anyway, I tested the script on the domain that wasnt indexed and hasn’t been in use for at least 3 months. The domain was indexed pretty much in the 24th hour which i was quite suprised about but I have yet to check out the backlinks but I will edit this post once I have done a proper check as half the decent backlink counters on the Internet have stopped working.

I would be careful using this tool if you are planning to use a domain as a new business or website as it is quite new and I myself haven’t checked out the side affects of using this script, I will be checking the back-links very closely over the next couple of weeks while also giving the domain a few more blasts.

If you looking for a quick fix to getting your website indexed and have a few backlinks then this tool is most definatly the way to go!

Building targeted backlinks with Squidoo

Well if you own a website, you know that you need to rank well on Google to get traffic. Traffic = Revenue.
That means we need good SEO. Therefore, we need some targeted backlinks that have PageRank and are obviously DoFollow. This will help to increase the SERPs of a website as well as the PageRank. Two in one.
Now let’s get started.

This little technique is building links from the very popular site, Squidoo. People build lenses about their chosen subject and write about them. Because of the great amount of information on them (As well as some good SEO maybe), they often have some PageRank. These are great places to put your link.

There is one good plugin that Squidoo users can install which gives us this ability. We need to use a simple Google query to find the lens’ that have this plugin installed.
Search Google for this:
site:www.squidoo.com “0 points” “Add to this list”
I get this result:
Results 1 – 10 of about 23,600 from www.squidoo.com for “0 points” “Add to this list”. (0.23 seconds)
That gives us 23,600 webpages for us to put our links on. We may need to narrow this down a little though, towards our keywords.

Let’s use another example:
site:www.squidoo.com “0 points” “Add to this list” Health
That query gives us this:
Results 1 – 10 of about 5,530 from www.squidoo.com for “0 points” “Add to this list” Health. (0.25 seconds)

Now you should be able to see the great amount of links you can build,Of course this is only the first step!

Now it’s time to filter your results based on PageRank. You can use whatever Bulk PageRank Checker you want to find the ones with PageRank.
Most lenses that I’ve found seem to have around PR1 – PR2 as an average. I’ve seen a LOT of PR3 ones though, and several PR4 pages. This is not bad at all.
Now that you have your lists, it’s time to show you how you can build your links on these pages.

Go to one of the pages.

For this example, I’m going to use this: http://www.squidoo.com/free-old-movies-and-tv-shows

This page is a PR3 page.
Scroll down until you see “Free Movie Sites” This is where you will add your link. Of course it isn’t going to say Free Movie Sites on each one, it will be different. You can see the general layout of what it looks like though.

Next, you click the button that says “Add to this list”.
You will see:
Type or paste links below (one per line):
(Ex: http://www.mysiteranked.com)
This is where you just put the URL of your site for now. Enter the URL, click Done Adding. You will then be taken to another form where you can alter your Website Title (Anchor text) and your Website Description. Submit this, and that’s it, done.
There are some different varieties. Some of the lenses you find might only be for Amazon products – You should notice it if all the other links are from Amazon.
Some of the lenses are moderated too. You should only add your links to lenses that are relevant to yours. If you follow this, I’m sure your links will get approved.
Enjoy

With Google's New Treatment Of PageRank Scultping, How Should I Use Nofollows?

As Matt Cutts has recently stated (on multiple occasions), Google has changed the way they handle nofollow links, which essentially makes PageRank sculpting a thing of the past.

The Change Before the change, Google would give extra weight to dofollow links on pages with nofollow links.

Let’s say that you had a page with 10 links. Then you nofollow 5 of the links. Under the old system, the 5 links that you did not nofollow, would get twice the PR juice as before, since they would get all the juice that had been going to the other 5 links also. Under the new system, this is not the case. Nofollowing links on a page will NOT push any extra link juice to the other links on the page.

So How Do I Use Do Follow? There are basically three ways that you can still use dofollow:

1: Paid links. If you sell links on your site, you should nofollow those links, or you risk getting a penalty.

2: Untrusted links. Any outbound links on your site you’re not sure whether they deserve link juice should be nofollowed. This allows you to maintain editorial control over link juice.

3: Pages You Don’t Want Indexed. If you have a link to your login page, for example, you could nofollow that link. Or you could just add a meta noindex tag to your login page. Under the new system, both methods do the same thing.

How to find .gov and .edu websites for backlinks

Search Engine Google, at least judging from its last update, favors .gov and .edu backlinks.  They tend to be more favourable with getting PR(pagerank) and the more  link juice flow when these types of domains are involved.

How to get these backlinks?

Stage One:

Do a Google search using these parameters –

site:.edu inurl:blog “your keyword”

site:.gov inurl:blog “your keyword”

Step 2:

Filter, Filter, Filter.  This is probably the most important step since you can collect all the links you want but if they are nofollow they will not do you much  good but add anyway hopefully you will get some traffic anyway.  The key to good “link shopping” is a well thought out, objective-based approach.

If you use firefox I would suggest using a plugin called “nodofollow” as this can save you ALOT of time looking at the source code looking for the “dofollow” tags!

For those who are years behind by not not using firefox what you need to do is find a comment posted by somebody and then rightclick, view source and you will see “rel=no follow” or “rel=dofollow” just before the name of the poster
