Forums link building and promoting your website or blog

Forums are a great but basic way of learning from other people while also being able to pass on your own knowledge at the same time while also gaining back links and traffic in one hit, quite a easy way of promotion is it not?

The most common way of getting traffic is by using the signature options that most forums offer this day and age, but are you using this function to your full potential?

I often see members on lots of forums who simply have a signature with text links like “Get free Money” or “Check my Site” but do you think that anyone really does click a link lame anchor text? OK you might get the odd person but would you really want just the odd visitor when you could have hundreds? Think about it, keep it interesting and make them wonder what your site is about!

Avatars are a great way of free self-promotion as the saying goes “A picture says a 1000 words! – I find the simpler the better, don’t give to much away and remember it’s a advert and not a award winning oil painting, the most important part of using a avatar is to put your domain onto the avatar, unless your Nike or Microsoft nobody is going to know what your logo is!

Now for you bloggers out there, you may have noticed that a lot of forums using the vBulletin software allow you to insert your blog feed so every time you post to your blog the feed will be placed by your username on the forum, its important once again make your post titles interesting so people will have the urge to click to visit your blog or website. I have found many fantastic blogs as I have noticed the rss feed and paid a visit and even bookmarked plenty so take advantage of that option if you have it.

Another method I don’t really like but its there for the taking is to use your location for putting a link into, I’m not sure how successful this is to be honest as its not a link just text.

Now you have set up your blog feed, your avatar looks fantastic and your signature and short but stabby and interesting for your potential client, all you simply have to do now is keep your posts interesting and always be correct in what you way. The best way for promotion in a forum is to simply start threads more than you reply so you get more coverage but keep your threads better than anyone elses as once you get respect you will notice your traffic starting to creep up day by day.

So time for you guys to give some input.

How did you find this blog? Have you had much success in forum promotion?

I enjoy your feedback and comments so please please please do comment :)

Just a quick post about dofollow tag

I have decided to change the “nofollow” tag on people’s comments to “dofollow” which been when you put your website link it will show up in the search engines.

Ill be monitoring comments very tightly and anyone who blatently spams and just puts “good blog visit my site” posts will be banned from the blog!

Bad blackhat tactics that is used over and over..

How not to undertake dodgy search engine optimisation that will destory your rank!

There are many good professional webdesigners around but sadly SEO is still reasonable new, and understanding of optimization in the general webmaster community is so poor, that it is still over run by get rich quick scams which promise fast and unbeatable results by using borderline SEO techniques that are more than likely going to destroy your website forever. Here I’m going to discuss some of those techniques and how to identify if someone is offering you them or if you have previously been the victim of them with your website.

Hidden Text

Still suprisingly common, applying hidden text is simply putting lots of keyword rich text to your webpages in a way that is either completely invisible or isn’t easily visible to the user or sometimes yourself if you didnt design your own website.

Different methods are used to hide this text. Sometimes it is simply set to the same colour as the background. If you see a large area of blank space in a page try dragging your mouse across it while holding down the mouse button. If there is text there you’ll see it highlighted. If you find any on your site get rid of it immediately and ask yourself why is it there, have I been hacked?, did my SEO guru charge me!

Try viewing the source code of your site. Are there any paragraphs of text there that you don’t see on the page? If so they may be hidden by various means. There may be a style applied to them that makes them invisible such as display: none – this could be either in-line or via a style sheet. They could also be in an absolutely positioned div which is set to be off-screen; making it left: -1000px for instance. The idea here is that the search engines will read the text in the code and give the page more importance because of it, without cluttering up the graphics-heavy pages with all that offending text. This is often used as a shortcut where a webmaster doesn’t want to change or redesign their site. However the search engines can increasingly detect this sort of disguise and will penalise you for it. Quite often free website templates have hidden text embedded on the template as people dont know html but if you find it….Get rid of it and fast!

Keyword Stuffing

Often closely related to hidden text, keyword stuffing attempts to further increase the appearance of keywords by inserting it in any place that it can go. ALT tags are a prime target – sometimes you will find images that have long sections of keywords added to both their alt tags and their title tags. Such tags should be used only for their proper purposes; the alt tag is there for people viewing the page with images turned off and for visually impaired people using screen readers, and it should contain enough information to tell them what the images contain and nothing more. If you are unsure then hover your cursor over a picture and text will show up explaining what the image contains.

A similar technique is sometimes employed using the no-script tag. This is supposed to be used to show a version of the content that would normally be seen via javascript when a browser has javascript turned off. Instead some people put large quantities of text inside the no-script tag that has nothing to do with any javascript content in the hope that again the search engines will read it.

Duplicating Content

There are a number of ways that duplicate content can be used in an unethical manner. Having set up a site you can purchase another domain name and then put a copy of the same site up on that domain address. Sometimes this is done with completely different addresses and sometimes with different suffixes of the same domain – so you may have www.rubbishseo.com, www.rubbishseo.co.uk, www.rubbishseo.org etc. The idea is to have multiple sites all ranking in the top ten and pushing competition out of the indexed pages when a user searches the keywords.

Once again Google,Yahoo,Bing and others engines have got wise to this and if they find duplicate content then they will remove the duplicates from their indexes and may even remove the “original” if they think it was deliberate. If you have multiple sites with the same content get rid of the duplicates. If you want to use the domain names then either put up separate sites on them or point them at your main site using either DNS redirection or 301 redirects which is the easiest and safest way.

There is another evil technique involving duplicate content – stealing someone else’s called plagiarism. The dodgy website owner checks the rankings for the keywords he’s interested in, goes to the sites that are number one on the search engines, and steals their text to put on his own site in the hope that it is the text that is producing the ranking. Of course this is a clear breach of copyright. If you find that someone has stolen your content from your website then you should email them and request that it gets removed and also threaten legal action. Do remember that alot of “webmasters” dont know its copyright theft so a simply email is normally more than enough to scare them off from doing it again.

Sneaky Redirects

Redirects rely on the fact that up until now search engines have not been good at reading or following javascript. The idea is that you create a number of single page sites which are crammed to the gills with keyword rich text for the search engines but which have javascript redirects in them that take real browsers instantly to another site before the viewer is even aware of the text. Again the idea is to saturate the search listings with sites that all go to the same place, thus keeping out the opposition from the index pages.

The search engine companies hate and will block any attempt to show their spiders something different from that seen by the users, and of course wish to provide as wide a range of relevant results as possible, so they dislike this technique. They have now developed ways of finding such redirects as their spiders become more skilled at understanding javascript, so again this technique will often be found out and penalised. If your SEO company suggests doorways pages run away as quickly as possible and maybe find a new SEO company and fast.

Searching for your keywords and research

On this blog I’m going to show you how to research and target your keywords for your website.

The key to ranking high in search engine is picking out keywords that are actually possible to rank for without to much competion. So many times I have seen others trying to rank for things that are just way out of their league. If you do the same your website will fail, remember its a big market and your a little fish!!

Remember that I have wasted so much time and effort trying to take on the world with the wrong keywords so read this blog with a open mind and hopefully you will take something away with you.

Keyword research is so important to every website. online store, blog on the internet finding a good keyword is what will make ranking on the search engines possible.

Now, most marketers would start telling you about all the keyword tools and how to use them. I’m not going to do that, because I want you to actually understand what you are doing and why you are doing it.

So, about the keyword research. What you need to do first is decide on a niche. It can be either loans, television, fitness, dogs, cats, anti aging, acai, etc etc etc…. You know what niches are by now. If you didn’t, then maybe you should learn about niche before starting your website ;)

Let’s say you picked your niche about cats and kittens and your ready to start building your website. Now you need to narrow it down.

How do you do that you ask?

Try using your head! Think about what people would search for if they were wanting to :

  • buy a cat or kitten
  • look after a cat
  • looking for healthy foods for cats

These are great keywords, but they are very competitive. Try something else to narrow down terms:

  • what food should I give my kitten
  • help my kitten wont eat food
  • how long should I feed cat kitten food

Ok, so those last few don’t sound good, but my point has been made. The narrower and more specific your keyword, the easier it is to rank for.

Now, search on google for those keywords. If the top 10 sites look like they are trying to rank for that term, then they probably are, and you need to research further. But if the top few sites are just
random article sites, or yahoo answers or forums then you can probably take it over.

Most seo gurus would say I dont know what doing or completly mental for choosing my keywords like this, but I have done this time and time again and it works for me!

You can also use the Google Adwords Keyword tool to see how many searches your keywords gets a month, which is pretty important and valuable to your website

Try to think of your own good, low competition keyword phrase to rank for. It doesn’t matter if there aren’t many searches per month, or if you can even make money with it.  So, go ahead, pick a really specific, super low competition keyword, and write it down an research until you cant research no more.

I hope this can help you in your start to SEO and please remember to bookmark this blog or even put a link on your website ;)
